About GentleChapters.org
GentleChapters.org is a directory of 3,798 therapists in the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia. Every one of them lists hospice and end-of-life counseling among their areas of focus.
Who it is for
It is for people living with a serious or terminal illness, and for the people around them: partners, children, parents, friends and carers. It is also for people who are grieving, whether the death was expected or sudden, recent or long ago, and for anyone who simply wants to look up a therapist they have heard of.
You do not need a diagnosis, a referral or to be sure that therapy is right for you before you read a profile.
Which therapists are listed
The directory currently lists 3,053 therapists in the United States, 675 in the United Kingdom and 70 in Australia. Each one lists hospice and end-of-life counseling among their focus areas. Most also work with many other concerns, such as grief, worry, low mood, caring for someone, family relationships and work, and each profile shows all of them.
Listing a focus area is not, by itself, evidence of specialist training or of experience working in a hospice. If either matters to you, ask the therapist about it.
What the therapists here do not do
The therapists listed offer talking therapy online. They are not hospice, palliative care or medical providers. They do not diagnose or treat illness, manage pain or symptoms, prescribe, or give medical advice, and they do not arrange care, nursing, equipment, benefits or funeral services.
If you or someone you care for needs medical or palliative care, speak to a doctor, the hospital or the care team. Therapy can sit alongside that care; it does not replace it.
We are independent
This site is not part of, endorsed by or connected with any hospice, hospital, health service, charity or government body. A listing here is not a referral, and it does not affect any care or support you may already receive.
Credentials differ by country
Therapists in the United States list a state license and, usually, an NPI number. Therapists and counsellors in the United Kingdom and Australia list registration with a professional body instead, for example the BACP or NCPS in the UK, or ACA, PACFA or AASW in Australia. Each profile shows the details on record so you can check them yourself.
What therapy can and cannot do
Therapy offers support. It gives you regular time to talk about what is happening, how it affects you and the people close to you, and what matters to you now. The profiles on this site do not diagnose anything, and no therapist can promise a particular outcome.
Where the profiles come from
Profiles are based on information supplied by BetterHelp, an online therapy platform. Each profile shows the credentials, focus areas, approaches, experience and languages the therapist lists.
We do not employ the therapists and we do not recommend one over another. When you follow a link to BetterHelp from a profile or topic page, we will earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
What this site is not
This site shares information. It is not medical advice, a hospice or palliative care service, a crisis line or an emergency service. If you need help now, in the US call or text 988, or call 911 in an emergency; in the UK call Samaritans on 116 123, or 999 in an emergency; in Australia call Lifeline on 13 11 14, or 000 in an emergency.
How to use the site
- Search for a name, or start with what you are facing or a location.
- Compare credentials, experience, focus areas, approaches and languages.
- Keep a shortlist of two or three people whose way of working suits you.
- From a profile, review the online therapy options.
